Description
The Ajanta Caves are a magnificent set of caves that have been carved into cliffs on a horseshoe-shaped ravine on the Waghora River. They are situated about 100 km north east of Allora, 104 km from Aurangabad and 52 km from Jalgaon Railway Station in the state of Maharashtra. Being so far off the beaten track did not deter Pam from seeking them out. The caves are World Heritage listed and date from the 1st and 2nd century when Buddhist Monks hand-carved the caves producing massive Buddhist statues, carved pillars and reliefs on the walls. Centuries later, during the Gupta period of Hinduism of the 5th and 6th centuries, beautiful depictions of ordinary life were painted on the walls of some caves. These coloured frescos inspired the painting depicted above in 2005. An actual copy of the cave paintings form the background to the work, while modern-day house exteriors add a quirky juxtaposition over the ancient cave paintings. Back to previous page click here.
